Prayer for Children During Covid-19 Pandemic

Wednesday April 1, 2020
Today we pray for children.  Even though they are not the ones most impacted by the sickness of the virus, they are still hugely impacted by events and changes going on around them that are quite difficult for them to understand.

In my readings this morning it had the verse where Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop them, because God’s kingdom belongs to people who are like these children.”  Matthew 19:14 ERV.  People thought kids weren’t important and when their parents were trying to get their children to Jesus for Him to bless, they were trying to shoo them away.  Not only did Jesus bring them close, and lay His hands on them and bless them, but He also held children up as an example to all of us for how to come to Him.

In Matthew 18 we read about a lovely encounter Jesus had with children.  This is what it says: About that time the followers came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in God’s kingdom?”  Jesus called a little child to come to him. He stood the child in front of the followers. The truth is, you must change your thinking and become like little children. If you don’t do this, you will never enter God’s kingdom. The greatest person in God’s kingdom is the one who makes himself humble like this child.

So, with the humility and child like faith Jesus wants from all of us, let’s pray for children and the impact of the COVID_19 virus on them.

We give thanks for children and their creativity and their loving hearts as they sing songs and make posters and put chalk messages on sidewalks and do all sorts of things to help loved ones and others in the community at this time.  We pray this will be a time where their hearts are actually trained in loving and caring and community and moved away from the distractions and personal needs that can sometimes overtake all of us in our consumer world.  Let the respect for God and care for others find a place of deep rootedness in their hearts that will carry forward.

For protection of the minds and heart of children as they are touched day by day with news of overwhelming problems.  We don’t quite know how all this affects them but we pray for protection, comfort, and peace for their hearts and minds as they hear things parents say or things on the news  Too many kids think things that have nothing to do with them are their fault and we pray for this kind of lie to not rest on their hearts.

We bless children and parents as they seek to find fun and creative activities to fill their days and hours.    With media going on for hours in homes these days, protect them from inappropriate content they might see on TV or stumble onto on the internet.  Help them to find joy in other kinds of activities.  We pray that the creativity and curiosity you’ve put in all of us, and which often has not been clouded over in the young – that this will come forward and be enhanced for good in the lives of children.

We pray for those who care for the spiritual needs of kids – those who usually would be teaching them in Sunday School or Children’s church and who find it challenging to connect during these days of social isolation.  Bless them to know how to reach out in creative ways that let kids know they are not forgotten and provide them with ways to make themselves available to God’s love and care every day.  Jesus you are still wanting kids to be blessed today and we pray that as you said, “Let the little children come to me and forbid them not” that we will find ways to make ways for kids to come to you during these weeks and months.

For children who have lost a parent or grandparent to this virus.  Bring comfort and fill even their minds and hearts with the sweetness of memories of times spent with these loved ones.  Bring others alongside during these times in safe ways to support them and explain things as best they can to them and to help them as they work through these significant events in their daily living.

For students who are trying to learn in a new way, in a different environment, with someone other than their teacher who is trying to assist them.  Give them an ability to take in information and grow in their ability to learn and retain skills and information.  Help them to have the focus and perseverance to work well and learn well.  We bless their parents as they try to support their learning during this time and teachers who are working hard to make lessons and positive learning activities available to households

We pray for those children who live in poverty and are hungry today.  May their parents find the supports and food that are available.  We bless the government financial help to be quickly accessed by their parents.  We bless their parents to make wise choices in the use of resources so these kids get what they need in these challenging times.  We pray for kids who live with anger and violence an abuse.  Protect them, God, we implore you.  Put a shield around them that stops these harsh attacks on their bodies and souls.  Help them to find support when things like access to a school counselor is currently unavailable.  Show them ways they can reach out and link up with support.  Give them peace  Calm their fears and help them to be safe today.

We bring children and their caregivers to You today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen
