Prayer To Live One Day At A Time One Moment At At Time

Let's pray and ask God to heal and restore us to the life of tenderness and peace He has planned for us and give us the strength to focus on just this one day.

A key principle we often hear in recovery circles is "living one day at a time."  In many meetings someone will read "Just for Today" - a list of positive actions that we may give focused attention to each day. When we pray the full version of the Serenity Prayer we quickly come to a line that says, "living one day at time, enjoying one moment at a time..."

As we apply the Twelve Steps, in order to maintain our life in recovery, many of us have found wisdom and help as we practice the Tenth Step and take inventory of our lives each day. God's Word encourages us to reflect on our life today, to make healthy choices today, to sort out problems today, to learn from our mistakes and our successes, and to surrender our will and our lives into God's care today, and every day.

1. How am I welcoming God’s word to shape my life today?

2. Am I truly living well, one day at a time?

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.  Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace.  Taking, as jesus did, this sinful world, as it is, not as I would have it.  Trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Heavenly Father,  There are so many things on my mind these days.  It's hard to know where to begin to tell You all about it.  But, You say that You care and You tell us to bring
all of our worries and cares to You because You care about us.

Here are the things I'm powerless over and the ways my life seems unmanageable.

(Name as many of those pressures and worries as you can.)

God, please come and be with me in my circumstances. Fill my mind with Your thoughts and Your wisdom. Please come and act on my behalf.  Show me what to do and give me the power and strength to take responsibility where I can but let go of the rest and lay down the burden.   Fill my heart with courage to act and to do the next right thing.

Please help me to change the things I can change, and leave the things I cannot change in Your care. Help me to
seek first your kingdom and your righteousness as I live one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time.

Thank You for Your great love which is new every morning and throughout the day as often as I need to tap into it.  Help me to recognize Your love for me and to find the faith and trust I need today to stay on course.

I won't let the past rob me of the peace and stability You promise me in this day.  I let go of regret and shame.  I will
live in this new day as the new person I am when God lives in me.

I won't let the unknowns and uncertainties of the future rob me of the joy and energy I need to enjoy this day and do what I need to

do.  You promise that if I would trust You with all my heart and not lean on my own understanding that You would direct my steps and show me the way to go one step at a time.

You say that You know we humans are weak but that Your power is made perfect in our weakness.  So, just for today I

will trust You to be strong for me and strength in me and show me a way through what's overwhelming.

For this one day I will be simple hearted and focused in my mind on what I can do and on your commitment to show me a way through the rest.   AMEN

As we learn to live one day at a time it's essential that we come to God with a willingness and intention to surrender our will and our lives into His care, one day at a time, one moment at a time.  What does that mean?  What does this way of daily surrendered living look like? What steps can we take to implement it?

1. ONGOING FORGIVENESS:  It's important to remember our daily need of God's ongoing mercy and forgiveness through Jesus, and to confess our sins and receive a fresh cleansing.

But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.  (1 John 1:7 NLT)

2.  DAILY GETTING TO KNOW GOD'S WILL:  What are we doing from day to day, even moment by moment, to train ourselves to listen and respond to the voice of God?  What tools are we using to help us learn and grow?  In what ways are we challenging ourselves to do what needs to be done, particularly when we don’t feel like doing it?

The Son can’t independently do a thing, only what he sees the Father doing. What the Father does, the Son does. The Father loves the Son and includes him in everything he is doing. “I can’t do a solitary thing on my own: I listen, then I decide. You can trust my decision because I’m not out to get my own way but only to carry out orders. (John 5:19-20, 30 MSG)

3. MAKING GOD'S AGENDA FOR ME, MY AGENDA FOR TODAY: Our new life in recovery may differ from the way of life we see many ordinary people exhibit in our society.  Many make power, prestige or money their idol. In the past some of us made sex, drugs and alcohol our idols.  Today, all of us are invited to make God's priorities our priorities, and in so doing gain a life that is good, pleasing and perfect.

Tell those rich in this world’s wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage—to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life.  (1 Timothy 6:17-19)

One of the greatest gifts of this new life in recovery is that having had a spiritual awakening we can now share a message of hope with others who "silently suffer" in what appears to be reasonably good circumstances.  Amazing but true.  Living one day at a time in God’s care is the only lifestyle that is truly good, pleasing and perfect for everyone.

4.  GIVE UP WORRY AND REGRET: It is easy to slide into worrying about tomorrow, dwelling on the "what ifs" and the "if onlys".  Each day brings with it a host of things we cannot change.  We face the continual reality of circumstances beyond our control.  There is also the reality of who we are -- human beings confined within the slice of time we call today.  It is tempting to deny the present, but escaping reality is part of the insanity of our addictive way of life. God has promised to take care of all our yesterdays and all of our tomorrows.  We simply need to live one day at a time.

Jesus said, "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?... But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.”  (Matthew 6:25, 33-34 NKJV)  Each day will bring us something to find joy in and God’s strength is promised for any troubles we may encounter.
