Praying "The Big Ask" During the Pandemic - God Stop The Spread of the Virus
"In your mercy, God, please stop this COVID-19 virus pandemic."
While we are seeing the numbers of infections and death slow down in many places around the globe we don’t yet see the end to the pandemic. This is not a time to “give up on God” but a time to redouble our efforts and pray until we see the results break through. God is at work. God is listening to our prayers. God is acting on our behalf. Let’s pray and keep on praying. Seek and keep on seeking.
So heavenly father we come to you today with what seems to us like a big ask but in fact to you it’s a welcome request from children whom you love.
With the centurion in the Bible Lord we often feel as he seemed to feel when he said, “Lord I’m not worthy to have you come under my roof but only say the word and my servant will be healed.” He came to you in desperation. We are coming to you in desperation as well. You see the carnage of this COVID-19 virus across the face of the earth. You weep with those who weep you mourn with those who mourn. You are the God who made us, knows us, and cares about everything that’s going on in our lives, across our land, across the world. You were honoured Lord Jesus by the faith of that centurion and you in fact spoke the word and at the very moment that you spoke it his servant was made well.

Today Lord we ask that you would speak the word, send out your word, stretch out your hand, and snatch people who are at the door of death.
Complete the healing and saving work in us and people around us that you won for us when you bore our sins on your body on the tree that we might die to sin and lived in righteousness. By your wounds we have been healed.
Lord, in faith we’re just quoting back your own words from the Bible and were standing on them today. You’ve given us authority to use your name and use your authority. Just like Peter and John when they went into the temple and saw a lame man who was begging. They said “We don’t have any silver or gold but what we do have we give you in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Rise up and walk.” Neither we nor doctors have treatment for this disease. We don’t have a vaccine. We don’t have all the respirators and the personal protection equipment necessary. We don’t even know everyone who is sick because many are resting at home, others have mild symptoms and don’t even know they are sick yet but things are developing in their bodies.
But what we do have is you Lord Jesus and so in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth we speak to those who are sick with this virus and say, “Be healed. Receive the poured out grace and healing from heaven. Receive it in your lungs, all other parts of your respiratory system, and in other vital organs. Receive strength and restoration. Be restored to your families. Be restored to a fruitful place in your community and society. Be strong and healthy and full of gratitude and praise to the living God for all that he has done in your life.
God, You promised us that if your people who are called by your name would humble themselves and pray and seek your face and turn from their wicked ways, then you would hear from heaven you would forgive their sin and you would heal their land. Two Chronicles 714.
And so today we come to you because we are powerless to stop this pandemic. We believe that you are God our Creator, God our Savior, God our healer, God our loving father and so we come to you as your beloved children. Raise up righteous people who will seek your face and turn from their wicked ways then walk with you all the days of your life, doing was just loving mercy, and walking humbly with you. Heal our land. Bring revival to our souls. Restore in us a proper perspective of You as King of Kings and Lord of Lords and we as Your people, safe in Your care.
As we said, Lord, it seems like the “big ask” but you are a great God and so we bring all this to you with faith in your unfailing love for us. Amen
There’s lots we don’t understand about prayer and why it takes some time for some answers to become obvious to us. I just want to remind all of us to have faith and persevere and pray. I want to do that with the story of a very good and faithful man in the Bible whose name was Daniel.
Daniel prayed and prayed and things didn’t seem to be happening. Then one day an angel appeared to him and this is what he said:
“Daniel, you are very precious to God, so listen carefully to what I have to say to you. Stand up, for I have been sent to you.” When he said this to me, I stood up, still trembling. Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer. But for twenty-one days the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels, came to help me, and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia. Now I am here (Daniel 10:12-14a NLT)
Let’s make this a prayer-filled day and watch God move.
