Prayer For Discernment to Make Wise choices As We Go Forward In The "New Normal"
Tuesday May 12, 2020
These are days where we need to exercise real discernment so we do the right thing in the situations we face. There are lots of new factors to consider with physical distancing until there is a vaccine for the COVID-19 virus and the fact that there’s still even so much we don’t understand about how this virus operates and is spread makes these next weeks and months difficult. We are all wary of doing things and being in spaces where we should not be because we do not want to become infected nor to pass the virus on to someone we love. Should the we let grandparents have hugs from their grandkids? Should we return to the office or continue to work at home? Should we try to get a haircut or physiotherapy that our aching muscles are longing for? Should we gather for small group meetings or continue to stay apart? There are and will continue to be many situations where we need to pray and seek God’s help as we discern the right thing to do in these very practical situations.
Let’s pray to do that and also to be spiritually discerning so we recognize God’s will and are able to apply it as we go through our days. Let’s Pray:
Thank you God for creating us to live in relationship You forever. You have given us free will to choose to love and obey you. When we belong to You, Your Holy Spirit lives in us to help us know You and Your ways and to have the capacity to separate and sift not just the good from the bad but also what is best over what is just okay.
There are so many things to consider as we make our way through each day – some factors we’ve been made aware of and others I don’t think we even know at this time – but we ask that You will help us use the information we have to make informed choices about our behaviour and travel and social interactions. We pray for those who are trying to reopen businesses that You will put practical ideas into their minds so they know how to do things well. We pray for patience to persevere with restrictions that continue to be necessary and to do the things that keep all of us safe whether that is wearing masks or not, or lining up and waiting to go shopping, or still remaining at home for the most part rather than freely travelling, help us to be respectful and to make choices, not out of fear but out of care and honouring the way things are at this time. Help us to continue to find things to be grateful for in imperfect reopening practices in our communities. Help us to be patient and encouraging with one another so we all can have peace of mind and heart and be settled enough to make wise choices.
Even though we chose to disobey You and from Adam and Eve on down through history to us, and relationship with You was cut off, eternity still remains in our hearts where it was planted when we were created and there is a seeking for truth and what is right that is there in every situation if we will just pay attention to Your voice.
Forgive us for not bothering to consult You with regards to what is best for us. Too often we think we know intuitively what the best thing to do is but over and over again when we do things on our own we end up suffering painful consequences for the unhealthy choices we make. The truth is that without Your wisdom, none of us know how to live purposefully in this life, or what will happen to us in the next.
Thank you so much God for sending Jesus into the world to give His life for us and make a way for us to have a living and eternal relationship with You, Our Heavenly Father. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who is living in us and teaching us the truth about life that we could never know on our own. Thank You for Your word recorded in The Bible that reveals truth to us so we can live well. As we spend time in Your word today, please give us a discerning heart to recognize Your ways and then put them into practice.
Heavenly Father, I confess that You are the only wise God. In each situation, today, please help us to make a humble assessment of our will versus Your revealed will. Help us to trust Your promises to direct our steps as we submit our plans to You. Teach us Your ways today, God so we discern and choose what is the best path forward in this new normal. Amen
