Prayer To Be Available To Meet The Right Needs

As we move back into somewhat more usual rhythms of life with work and worship and play it becomes a bit more challenging to make time for others and to be willing to make adjustments to our schedules and priorities when someone comes along with an unexpected need.
Of course it’s not our responsibility to meet every need and in these days of huge need that have come from the financial effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns. There are so many heart wrenching needs that we are being made aware of every day and we do need to ask God where we are meant to serve and provide but not be those who rescue and codependently enable others to live as helpless victims.
God has a way forward for everyone who is truly willing to be led by Him. God will help all of us to be creative and kind in the service we give to others. This honours God.
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,
“Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” A
nd I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
Isaiah 6:8
I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy,
to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,
holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Romans 12:1
So today, we pray to simply be available to fulfill God’s agenda, with open and willing hearts to hear the plans He has for us and to follow His directions.
Heavenly Father, it’s so easy to get caught up in our own needs and plans and turn Your way of living upside down. We don’t even need the disastrous events of the pandemic to get us to that place but certainly the extra challenges of these times make us all wonder what we can do and who we should help in the middle of what already seem life full schedules and lots of extra pressures. Many of us are even living with less resources to than ourselves. Help us to not give into the trap that we know what the day needs without consulting You. Help us to make our agenda with Your heart in mind, after having asked for Your guidance and listened for that beautiful quiet voice of Your Holy Spirit as He puts a thought in our heads or heart that we just know is the right thing for right now.
We don’t want to waste the hours of this day and the limited resources we have of energy, time and money, on doing things that are not useful. As surely as You can take 5 little loaves and 2 fish and feed more than 5000 people, if we will hear Your voice and make available to You what we have, You will do more with it than we expect.
Instead of blindly rushing through our own agenda we want to put Your priorities to the top of our “to do” list. We want to make ourselves available to be used as You choose, even if initially it seems to ask more of us than what we think we are capable us. You are growing us and stretching us and training us too and there IS MORE that we can be and do than we know. We just need to be faithful to do what we can and You’ll direct us to the right people in the right place at the right time.
If you could use uneducated self-centered fishermen in Your time on earth to be part of Your movement to turn the world upside down and change life across the face of the earth like never before, then You certainly can do something useful with our little lives today too.
Jesus said to them, “Come with me!
I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.”
Right then the two brothers dropped their nets
and went with him.
Mark 1:17-18
So Lord, we want to know Your will and follow Your direction today. You know what’s best for us. Once again, when you ask the question as You did to Isaiah, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” I pray You will give us the courage and generosity and faith to say, “Here am I send me.”
