Prayer To Live Just For Today Unafraid of Unpleasant Surprises
Sunday July 19, 2020
JUST FOR TODAY I WILL TRUST GOD’S GOOD PATH
As reopening stages have moved from stage 1 to stage 2 and now into stage 3 officials are watching carefully to see that we are able to keep the curve of the virus flattened. In our local area here in British Columbia some folks are a bit nervous as for most of the last week we’ve had case numbers in the 20’s compared to an average of about 10 per day for a few weeks. Dr. Bonny Henry our chief health official assures us that with more travel and contact this is not surprising but at the same time cautioning all of us to do what we know to be the good and safe practices that got us to the place where we are. If we do what we need to do today, tomorrow and the next incubation period will not bring unpleasant surprises
In certain recovery circles groups say the following words each time they meet:
Just for today I will be unafraid, believing that
as I trust in God with all my heart and
lean not on my own understanding,
He will lead me along a good path.
As we learn to live one day at a time, it's essential that we come to God with a willingness and intention to continuously surrender our will and our life into His care. What does that mean? What does a life surrendered to God look like? What steps can we take to implement it in our daily lives?
Heavenly Father, we do want to living in loving trusting relationship with You today. We know that if we say we trust You and really do that, we can live confidently that what You say can be relied upon.
Trust in the Lord and do good, then you will live safely
in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you your heart’s desires.
Commit everything you do to the Lord.
Trust him, and he will help you.
Psalm 37:3-5
So, the first thing we want to do today is to find out what You say and what Your plans are for this day. Help us to take time to quiet our hearts, read Your Word, and have a conversation with You. We want to know the path you are setting before us. We want to be aware of the harmful thoughts and behaviours to avoid that will cause us to stumble. We want to do good. We don’t know enough to know in the long run what is good and what will harm. Give us the humility we need today to submit our thoughts and plans to You and allow You to affirm or change what we think the day should look like.
Lord, just knowing what Your will is - well, that’s the easiest part. Trusting You and Your way, particularly when it's different from what we've known and acting in faith on what You say - that's the tough bit. And then to actually be happy about the plans You show us when we are feeling vulnerable and out of control – well – you know what we feel about that.
We don't know what we'll face today, who will question us, or do things in a way that requires us to face up to them trusting only in Your strength and wisdom because our own isn't enough. Help us to give up our unknowns, our fears, and our worries, and wait for You to show us Your tried and true path. We want to put our hand in Your's and walk forward with You
Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those
who walk in wisdom are kept safe. Trust in the Lord
with all your heart and lean not
on your own understanding; in all your ways
submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 28:26; 3:5-6
Forgive us for the many times we’ve been fools and put more stock in our own ideas and plans than in Your’s – or just barreled ahead with our own projects, never giving You a chance to give us input – either because we thought we knew or because we were in a panic.
Thank you for your promise that when we walk in Your wisdom, You will keep us safe. We submit our unknowns to you - our frustrations, our worries, our fears, as well as our hopes and our dreams We put them into Your care. You will lead us along a good path today. You will walk along side us and give us help at every turn. Amen
