Living Through The Mundane

I don’t know about you but some days of this long season of social isolation and physical distancing, I find myself struggling with the sameness of one day with the next.  With case numbers for COVID-19 on the rise here in BC I try to stay away from places where people congregate as much as possible.  I try to limit trips to the store and when I do make trips to the grocery store I try to schedule it for either early in the morning or later in the evening.

I work at home and so my commute is from the bedroom to the table.  Most of my work is done on my laptop computer or the iPad and so when it’s time to relax and change things up, what’s available?  Another screen for reading a book or watching a show.  As I was winding down my working activities on a Friday afternoon recently I felt my emotions slump a bit as I realized that the weekend was here but, so what.  Parks and beaches we used to visit during the summer are full on weekends these days so they are off limits.  Restaurants are not proving to be very safe places to go out to eat so it’s best to avoid those.

God has promised us abundant life and in the middle of this kind of a “season of the mundane” we have to look a little harder sometimes to find it.

I am very grateful that God’s unfailing love is constant through the ups and downs of life.

I’m grateful that God’s purposes still stand in these days and He wants us to enter into joyful ministry with Him in whatever opportunities we can find today.  I think about the Apostle Paul who travelled far and wide to share the Gospel and then for years found himself locked in a dark and uncomfortable jail cell.  We have so many wonderful letters in the New Testament that were written during those prison years.  Paul spends his time praying for His friends, writing words of encouragement to his friends, encouraging them on in the work of God’s kingdom.

I thought we could benefit by praying with him today.

May God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ
give you grace and peace.
Philippians 1:2

We keep asking God to fill you
with the knowledge of what he wants.
We pray he will give you the wisdom
and understanding that the Spirit gives.
Then you will be able to lead a life
that is worthy of the Lord.

We pray that you will please
him in every way. So we want you
to bear fruit in every good thing
you do. We pray that you will grow
to know God better. We want you
to be very strong, in keeping with
his glorious power. We want you
to be patient.

We pray that you will never give up.
We want you to give thanks
with joy to the Father.
He has made you fit to have what
he will give to all his holy people.
You will all receive a share
in the kingdom of light.
Colossians 1:9-12

I pray that your love will grow
more and more. And let it be
based on knowledge and
understanding. Then you
will be able to know what is best.
Then you will be pure and
without blame for the day
that Christ returns. You will
be filled with the fruit of
right living produced by
Jesus Christ. All these things
bring glory and praise to God.
Philippians 1:9-11

I keep asking that the God of our
Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father,
may give you the Spirit of wisdom
and revelation, so that you may
know him better. I pray that the
eyes of your heart may be
enlightened in order that you
may know the hope to which
he has called you, the riches
of his glorious inheritance in
his holy people, and his
incomparably great power
for us who believe.

That power is the same
as the mighty strength
he exerted when he raised Christ
from the dead and seated him
at his right hand in the heavenly
realms, far above all rule and
authority, power and dominion,
and every name that is invoked,
not only in the present age
but also in the one to come.
Ephesians 1:17-21
