Prayer For Kids, Parents, and Teachers As They Return To School During The Pandemic

Back to School

Well, so many questions are on the minds of so many parents and children as the day approaches for kids to go back to school.  Here in Canada that usually happens the day after Labour Day – the first Monday in September.  Store shelves are stocked again with school supplies and the flyers in my mailbox have them displayed front and center.

The news cycles are filled with announcements and family stories of the impact this is all having on families with kids with special needs, on mothers in the workplace, on grandparents who are currently “in the bubble” of safe physical distancing but who could so easily be impacted should a child get infected at school and bring the virus home.  Even our prime minister says his family hasn’t come to a decision yet about whether or not their kids will go to school when they reopen.

Children, their care, and their education are important to God as well.  So today we pray for children.

Heavenly Father, there’s even something about just beginning this prayer addressing You as the good Father that you are.  We’re grateful to know that You care for kids and want all kids to be successful .  Today we pray for parents and teachers and care gives to do all they can so they:

Teach children in a way that fits their needs,
and even when they are old,
they will not leave the right path.
Proverbs 22:6

That’s a general principle in the “how” of teaching kids.  When it comes to “what” we should teach them we have also have Your famous instructions to parents way back in the time of Moses and the children of Israel as they were about to enter the land You promised to them after bringing them out of slavery.

Always remember
these commands
that I give you today.
Be sure to teach them
to your children.
Talk about these commands
when you sit in your house
and when you walk on the road.
Talk about them
when you lie down
and when you get up.
Tie them on your hands
and wear them
on your foreheads to help you
remember my teachings.
Deuteronomy 6:6-8

So we pray today that the content of what we expose children to and seek to fill their minds with will be pure and wholesome and will accurately reflect Your principles recorded in Scripture. We pray for a change of perspective in the minds of those who promote curriculum that goes so directly against Your ways for holy living.  Although it seems a pretty impossible request, we still ask for legislation to change requirements for content that exposes our children to ungodly teachings that distort their perspective on life as You always intended.

Most of all help us to teach kids that they are loved and that they matter, that what they think and feel is important for us to listen to.  Jesus, You even told us that we need to learn from children and how they accept things in order enter in Your kingdom.

Some people brought
their small children
to Jesus so that he could
lay his hands on them
to bless them. But when
the followers saw this,
they told the people
not to do this. But Jesus
called the little children
to him and said
to his followers,
“Let the little children
come to me. Don’t stop
them, because God’s
kingdom belongs
to people who are
like these little children.
The truth is, you must accept
God’s kingdom
like a little child
accepts things, or you
will never enter it.
Luke 18:15-17

Give us grace to trust You as a child trusts a loving parent and find security and joy when the parent is near and a safe refuge to run to when things go wrong.

Thank you for Your healing and comforting promise that even if parents don’t get things right You will always be there for kids, even grown up kids like us.

But the Lord says,
“Can a woman
forget her baby?
Can she forget the child
who came from her body?
Even if she can
forget her children,
I cannot forget you.
Isaiah 49:15

And so today we surrender to You our kids, the back to school plans, the health and safety of entire families, and the protection of hearts and minds in truth.  You are a good good father.  That’s who You are and we are loved by You.  That’s who we are.  Amen
