Calling Out To God On Ordinary Days As Well AS In Times of Disaster

911
On September 11, 2001 I heard a news story on the radio and then turned on the television. Newscasters were talking about a plane that had crashed into the one of the World Trade Center towers. While I was watching the second plane actually flew into the next tower and it became very apparent that what we were seeing was not accident. Throughout the day more news came of the crash into the Pentagon and also the plane that was diverted to a field that was also targeted for a place of maximum destruction and devastation.
Even though it’s almost 20 years ago from that day it feels much closer in time.
It is interesting to me that the emergency call number on our phones is 911. I don’t know if there was any kind of a plan to link these events with that concept of emergency calls. What I do know is that in our time of trouble, God is ready and waiting for us to call. He will hear and answer.
I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.
Psalm 17:6
One day when Elijah stood before the people and many false prophets, he set this challenge in place.
Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire—he is God.”
1 Kings 18:24
The true and living God showed Himself with fire. He is God and we are His people.
We probably don’t need God to show Himself with fire today but there are many ways that we long for God to hear us when we call and to respond to us. So, let’s call on Him today:
Thank You God that You are the all-powerful and every present God who tells us:
The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.
Psalm 145:18, 86:5
We don’t even always know how to express our hearts to You but we know that if we will be sincere and be honest with You, You will hear us, guide us, provide for us, and get us through whatever we are facing. You’re not a God who is far away and disinterested in our mundane little lives. The details that are important to us are important to You and we pray to be those who bring all the details of our day before You for Your input and Your blessing.
Call on me in the day of trouble; will deliver you, and you will honor me.
Psalm 50:15
We’re so glad that we don’t have to wait for a day when disaster comes to call out to you but when it does come, we can certainly find you ready to deliver us. Help us to honour You for all You do. We so easily forget Your tremendous help during our stressful times when You bring about solutions. We too easily go on our merry way and think we can handle things now. Please give us thankful hearts and long memories of Your many blessings in our lives. As we trusted You when we were desperate, so help us to stay alert and trusting every day, because we need You just as much on ordinary days as on days of disaster.
What are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.
Acts 22:16
God we are also grateful that we can not only call out to You for needs we have in this physical world but that we can call out to You and find forgiveness for our news and new life with You forever through the Lord Jesus Christ. God, help us not to waste this great gift You’ve made available to us. Whether it is for the first time or just because we fail You each day, we are calling on the name of Jesus Christ today as our way of saying that we are trusting in what He did for us when He paid the price for our sins on the cross. Forgive us God and wash us clean. Strengthen us to walk in Your way all the days of our life.
And simply because there is so much that we don’t know about our lives and any day, we call out to You today, God, because You have promised that You will answer us ant ell us great and unsearchable things that we don’t know. Teach us today. Show us Your heart and Your plans today. As we walk in those plans we know that we will have an amazing day that is even more memorable than September 11, 2001.
Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
Jeremiah 33:3
