Choosing For Blessing In Every Area of Life
As case numbers for COVID-19 increase once again in these days health officials tell us over and over again that we know what to do to bend the curve and crush the virus. The problem isn’t in the knowing, it seems, but in the choosing to make the personal sacrifices that are necessary for this positive outcome to be seen across our communities.
This isn’t the first time such life and death choices have been put to a nation. Remember when God spoke to His people through Moses and challenged God’s people to make the choices that would allow God’s blessing to touch every area of their life. Here are some examples.
If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:
Deuteronomy 28:1-2
You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.
The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.
Deuteronomy 28:3-4
Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.
You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.
The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.
Deuteronomy 28:5-7
The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.
Deuteronomy 28:8
Who wouldn’t want their nation and their communities to be blessed? We are all longing for our families to be healthy and provided for. That blessing is certainly included in what we just read. Workplaces, travel, protection from enemies, success in all you put your hand to wherever you go. It seems like pretty much every area of life is covered in God’s desire to bless His people.
The only catch for all of us is that these blessings hinge on a choice – will we choose for God, to love Him, listen to Him, and hold fast to Him.
This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20a
Let’s pray:
This is our prayer today, Loving God, that we would have the good sense and humility to choose to love You, listen to You, and hold fast to You, because You and You alone are our life.
Forgive us for the many ways we live as through we were our own provider, protector and the one with knowledge to take us forward to our destiny. We know so little and there are so many great forces that rise up against us in various ways. This COVID-19 virus is just one example of the power to destroy that is at work in our world today. Only You have the power to deliver us from absolute destruction and doom. Help us to come to an ever clearer understanding of the real way things are – not just how they seem to our physical eyes or even how they are described to us by politicians and in the media.
We pray today that many would choose to fully obey You, the Lord your God and carefully follow all Your commands. Let it begin with us. We don’t want to be selective with what You say works. We don’t want to try to interpret things so we can get around Your commands and do things the way we want or in ways that are convenient in our times. We want to wholeheartedly follow Your words because they are the words of life we need.
Once again today, Lord, we choose life. We will listen to Your voice. We will hold fast to You because You are our life. Amen
Let me close these moments together with that amazing blessing that Moses also gave His people.
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.
