GREAT LOVE

Well, who hasn’t heard of Romeo and Juliet – great lovers in distant history.  We remember the scandal of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII and how his abdication of the British throne led to his brother’s coronation and then to that of our current Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip – who’ve shown us how to stick together with one another for more than 70 years.  And then I know I’m dating myself but I think of great love stories like Doctor Zhivago and The Sound of Music, and Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner etc. etc.  There is something so appealing about commitment and love and how we are lifted up by these wonderful stories of love overcoming great difficulty.

I’ve been saddened during these days of the pandemic to hear an ad on the radio as I’ve been driving of a financial service who’s selling point is to husbands and wives needing to sort through their finances because they’ve been together so much more during the time of social isolating that this increased time has brought enough strain into their marriage to bring it to an end.

Well, each of us has the opportunity today, regardless of whatever pressures this pandemic has brought to our relationships, to celebrate the greatest love story of all.  Listen to these words.

See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.

Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is.

And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.    1 John 3:1-3

So we pray today with thanks and also to ask God to show us more than what we know and have experienced so far because His love for us is more than epic and we need that love to get us through tough times.  God is offering.  Are we receiving and being strengthened for the long haul with this amazing love?

See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.

Loving God, what can we say in response to Your great love for us.  You are and have always been the Loving Father our hearts have longed to know and in whose love we flourish.  Many of us had troubled or perhaps no relationship with our earthly fathers.  Others have had a relationship with a dad that brings tears of joy to our eyes as we remember good times together.  Regardless if our relationship with our father has been positive or very challenged, You have always stood ready to be the father we need and to provide the protection, the comfort, the wisdom, and most of all that pride and joy that a father has for his child.

We know that without the Holy Spirit living in us we can’t really know this great love.  So many people around us long for this kind of great love that only You can give.  We pray today that we will humbly come to You through Jesus, asking for the forgiveness and bringing to life that only Jesus can give us.  He’s the one who suffered death on that ugly cross so we could pass through death to life and be joined in an everlasting relationship of love and life with You.

We’re so grateful that we don’t have to earn this great love – well, we know we never can.  There’s no weighing good and bad and hoping we’ve been good enough.  We’re not.  You don’t wink at sin because You know it kills us and You are desperate that we could come to life and then experience this great love today and every day

Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is.

Thank you for the power of Your love that will carry us through this season and all the days of our life until we see Jesus again.  We can’t imagine what You are actually telling us when You say that we will be like Jesus – as He really is.

And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.    1 John 3:1-3

But in these in between days when we struggle with pressures and pandemics and all the problems that come with day to day life as we know it today, we pray that we will do them all with You, trusting in who You are for us and the guidance, even correction, You are willing to show us every day.  Hold us close to Your heart today, we pray.  Carry us through.  Amen
