A Prayer To Experience Security During Precarious Times
As the inauguration of the new president of the United States approaches security precautions ramp up. The other day we heard that there were now more security deployed in Washington DC than there are Canadian soldiers. Fencing and razor wire, checkpoints and closed off areas like the Mall – all of these precautions put in place due to the threat of violence from far right groups.
Security is an important issue for more than just the incoming administration in United States. It’s important for all of us isn’t it? How wonderful to know that God is with us, holding on to us, and keeping us secure.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me Psalm 16:8-10a
I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely. Psalm 63:8
Help us today, Lord, to keep our eyes on You. You are close – right at hand. No matter what shakes around us, You can hold us steady. We don’t need to fear. We don’t need to worry. We can relax and enjoy this day in the security that You will not abandon us. That makes us glad. The real issue isn’t Your presence but our willingness to cling to You and allow Your strong right hand to hold us securely. Help us to relax and let You hold onto us as we face whatever today brings. Amen
Your Word tells us: Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes. Psalm 112:6-8
And so Lord, we put our hope in You. We’re not perfect people but we are those who are seeking to live right – to be righteous people. We rely on Your promise that when we do that we will not be shaken Even though bad news comes we won’t have to be afraid because in the end, we will look with triumph on our problem situations.
Help us today God to stick to the basics and just hold on to You. Too often we know that we are desperate for the security the familiar brings. It might be a relationship, a job, a cheque, a neighborhood, or just a way of doing things. When change comes into our lives that we have no control over, we worry and fear the unknown and our place in it. Today we want to move away from desperation and fear to trust in You and rest security.
Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out. Proverbs 10:9
And Lord, it’s not just outside circumstances that keep us feeling insecure. Sometimes it’s just our own unpredictable thoughts and desires that make us afraid of our next move. We speak about You God but today and every day we need to let the living reality of You in us – working through us – come alive. Your power can not only hold us steady but can use us to bless others as life shifts and turns around us.
We should all sleep like babies every night simply because we know we are children of the Lord and well cared for.
In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety Psalm 4:8
So Lord today we will:
I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore. Psalm 121:1-2;7-8
Now that’s security. Let’s relax and enjoy this day, confident in God’s willingness and ability to hold us secure.
