A Prayer Asking God To Speak To Us Through His Word Today

WORD OF GOD SPEAK - song and lyrics by Mercy Me on Youtube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ6qZgWuO7g

I hope that reading God’s Word and prayer are a part of your everyday life.  If not, maybe today can be the first day of these encouraging and life-giving practices.

There is a practice of reading God’s word that is called “Lectio Divina.”  Now there’s no need to get caught up with a fancy word.  All this practice is is a way of praying the scriptures with a hope to really let it take root deeper in our lives.  It has us reading a short passage slowing and more than once.  We think about it and ask God’s Spirit to speak to us about it each time we read it.  We pray about what have been reading and ask God to make it come alive in our lives.

It reminds me a lot of these verses in God’s Word:

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.  Colossians 2:6-7

Honestly, if you want to know why we take these moments each day together, this is my heart – that we would read God’s Word, see how it applies to our lives and then open our hearts with a willingness for God to not just have us know what He’s saying but actually bringing His instructions alive in our desires and our actions.  I make it a point to put the text of what is written in the Bible and then the words we are praying about it on the screen as often as I can because it’s really important that it be God’s Word that is changing us and leading us forward.

All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.  Psalm 119:160

Heavenly Father today we want to join our prayer with the prayer of the Lord Jesus when He prayed:

Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth  John 17:17

We agree with You when Your Word tells us:  All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  2 Timothy 3:16

Write Your Words on our heart, Holy Spirit.  Help us to be inspired by how wonderful God is, how reliable His words to us are, and how helpful each word is to show us what’s wrong in our lives so we can steer clear of danger and harm and learn how to walk and act safely and securely in the will of God.

Help us today to take time to do what the old Anglican prayer encourages us to do as we pray:

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The musical group Mercy Me recorded a song a few years ago titled, “Word of God Speak”.  I’ll put a link to a recording of that song in the notes below.  The refrain of that song is a wonderful prayer:

Word of God speak

Would You pour down like rain

Washing my eyes to see

Your majesty

To be still and know

That You're in this place

Please let me stay and rest

In Your holiness

Word of God speak

That’s our prayer today, Loving God.  Help us to act on this desire today and every day.  Amen
