Today is Canada’s birthday. As with other countries, history shows that the founding principles of the nation were rooted in belief in God and a commitment to building a nation of people who lived in His will and under His blessing.
Written on the wall outside the Peace Tower of our Parliament Buildings in Ottawa are these words.
Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;
But happy is he who keeps the law.
Proverbs 29:18
He [God] shall have dominion also from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
Psalm 72:8
Unfortunately recent discoveries of so many unmarked graves of children who were taken to residential schools shows that while the intention might have been there to keep God’s laws, the actions of so many, including those who represented both the government and the church, were far from God’s ways.
This Canada Day will be one of reflection more than celebration as we ask God for forgiveness, for healing, and for a willingness to take the time to know Him and follow His will in His way and time.
No matter where in the world we live today, we all need to grow in our conscious awareness of God’s plan for us and our country, and together with faithful people across the earth live and work so God is honoured in every territory and country.
Let’s pray:
Heavenly Father, we pray to seek to live in peace with our neighbours
and to look to You for direction in all our affairs. We ask that Your
favour rest on us, on governments who seek justice and truth and that
people in every country on every continent may be guided by Your
wisdom so peoples may flourish and prosper.
Endow the king with your justice,
O God, the royal son with your
righteousness. May he judge your
people in righteousness,
your afflicted ones with justice.
May he defend the afflicted
among the people and save the children
of the needy; may he crush the oppressor.
In his days may the righteous
flourish and prosperity abound
till the moon is no more.
May he rule from sea to sea
and from the river to the
ends of the earth.
Psalm 72:1-2,4, 7-8
With King David of old we pray for our leaders that they will be filled
with your justice and righteousness. May they judge your people in
righteousness and your afflicted ones with justice. May they defend
the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy.
May they crush the oppressor. In their days, may the righteous
flourish and prosperity abound until the moon is no more. May your
righteous rule go out from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of
the earth.
That verse so sounds like Canada and we thank You for all You are doing in our country.
Send Your Spirit, Lord, and let Your Spirit be poured out on our
leaders and on those being raised up, that they will honour the God
who created all of us whatever our ethnic or cultural background, and
we pray they will make laws and keep laws that honour Your ways. We pray they will be filled with courage and conviction and vision so they
give protection and shaping to a culture for all that allows everyone to
flourish under the blessing of God.
As we face these uncertain times in our nation and the world, we ask
you, Lord, to come and be with us with healing and blessing and
deliverance from those things that harm. We entrust our nation to
your loving care. among us.
Give us Your light and Your truth to guide us in all our ways so that
we seek Your will in our lives and impact the world in life-giving ways
for the sake of Your Kingdom. In Jesus' Name we pray.
