One of the things my friend Evelyn and I love to do is to go to the small coastal village of Steveston and have fish and chips on the wharf.
It’s fun to walk around and see the great variety of people who move along the boardwalk. There’s no end to the activity around the boats bringing in fresh catch from the sea. We see whale watching vessels come and go with tourists. There’s never a dull moment, as they say.
Last weekend we took our lawn chairs and sat in the park just on the other side of the fishery for a little while.
Lots and lots of sea vessels of every size and description moved up and down that stretch of water. Amazing to me to see little tugboats and huge loads they haul on barges or, as was the case the other day, a rather decrepit ocean liner.
It reminded me of the fact that some things that seem small can be used by God, in His wisdom and power, to do great and even seemingly impossible things. Listen to these encouraging words from the Bible:
For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Deuteronomy 7:6-8
God didn’t just do that with the people of ancient Israel either. It’s God’s way of doing things so His power can be evident for everyone to see. Here’s what we know about how God does things.
But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:27-31
What looks huge on your horizon today? What situation seems impossible in comparison to the resources you think you have. Today is a good moment to ask God for His plans and then to go forward with courage based on His guidance and power.
Well Lord, we never quite understand why you choose to do things in the way that you do but we’re grateful. We know that You know more than we do and so we know that Your way of doing things is much better than how things appear to us today. We see what’s on the surface and You see everything that is lurking below the surface that could do real damage to us. You know what’s around the corner in the future that we have no knowledge of today.
We’re grateful that we don’t have to know a lot or feel strong, in order to do all that You have in Your good plan for us to accomplish today. In fact it’s best when we acknowledge that we don’t know all that much and we are weak, so we can rely on your strength. That’s what we choose to do today. We are grateful that you have chosen us. We are grateful that you choose today to live in us and to work through us to accomplish great things.
We may feel like tiny little tugboats on the wide expanse of the ocean, but Lord we know that you can give us the power to accomplish great things. You can use us to show the beauty of Your ways to people who think they’re wise enough on their own but who don’t know all the dangers beneath the surface and the obstacles ahead.
Give us faith today to believe in you God. Give us faith in your plan to use us just as we are, in Your wisdom and power to do great things today. Help us to do all that is on Your agenda for us in this day and to give You thanks and praise that you have chosen us. Amen
Whether you are somewhere restful like beside water or busy with your work life today, I pray you will have faith to experience God’s power and accomplish great things. Have a great day.
