SHARING A MEAL WITH JESUS

Thursday May 19, 2022

Many of you know that I enjoy cooking and sharing meals with friends.

On the night before He suffered and died on the cross for us, Jesus had supper with his friends.  He’d sent a couple of them along to prepare the special Passover meal that was Jewish custom for the day.  After they gathered together Jesus said this,

Jesus said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.  Luk2 22:15

My heart is touched, isn’t yours, with the knowledge that Jesus knew what was so soon going to be upon Him and still he eagerly desires to share a meal with His friends.

It was at this meal that Jesus explained how broken bread and poured out wine would represent His broken body and poured out blood on our behalf.  It’s what we remember each time we take communion together with other believers.

Jesus doesn’t just want to have a meal with his nearest and dearest either.

Remember how when Jesus wanted to extend His forgiveness to a notorious sinner named Zacchaeus he went to his house for dinner:

When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”  Luke 19:5

Such a great desire for relationship with us and companionship with us.  This is God’s heart for us.

Many of us also know the words of invitation recorded for us with these words:

Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.  Revelation 3:20

Oh Lord, help us not to be too busy to take time to invite You in to have a meal with us.  We want to share our lives with You and welcome all that You are into all that we are.

We are so honoured that You would want to spend time with us and eat our food and converse with us.  You’d think You would have so many much more important and worthy folks to spend time with who could offer You much better food than us, and yet, you greatly desire to eat with us.

Thank You for coming, for coming for us, for being with us, for sharing Your heart with us and for raising us up to be with You in the middle of it all.  Amen

Let’s take time to be with Jesus today.  Stop a moment and have a cup of tea and reflect on His love.  Go for a walk and have a conversation with God.  Whatever works in our lives, let’s make space to share our day with God.  He’s ready and waiting for the invite.
