Experience Life In The Shadows of Uncertainty When Moving From Darkness To Light

LIVING IN THE SHADOWS

We often describe life without God as darkness and life with God as light.  In so many ways a life of shame and chaos or just meaningless wandering seems like one lived under the cover of darkness.  Our kind God is willing to find us and pursue us wherever we find ourselves, and right now He is inviting us to move towards the light of His presence.

So justice is far from us, and righteousness does not reach us.  We look for light, but all is darkness; for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows. 

Isaiah 59:9

We may have heard God’s call and initiated a move away from the darkness towards the light, but then, we got caught somewhere in-between, "in the shadows." What is life like in the shadows? We have left what was a familiar way of life, and have entered into an unfamiliar reality. 

Where we knew how to survive in certain circumstances, even if that was in a dysfunctional way, now we now struggle with uncertainties as we learn to live in a new way with new values and practices that run counter to how we’ve always done things. The transition process feels shadowed by what we don’t know, by what we no longer feel we can control, or by not simply getting our own way whenever we want it. 

Fortunately, when we face life in the shadows of transformation, we are assured of God’s comforting presence as well as His help, strength and protection. 

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. 

Psalm 23:4

It is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Philippians 2:13

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 

Psalm 91:1

Loving God, Thank You for calling us from darkness to life in the light.  We find walking in the shadows as we move from darkness to light a bit disconcerting but we know that walking with You in the shadows is better than being in the dark on our own.

Thank You also that like the shade of a tree is comforting and refreshing on a hot sunny day, so the You promise to  cover us and keep us in perfect peace as we continue to walk with You.  Your healing power calms and restores our souls while we face the uncertainties of life in transition. We’re grateful for that.  Help us as we walk today out of the shadows into the light of Your love.  Amen
