Finding God In Troubled Times

Sunday August 7, 2022

What do we do when we feel like we are in trouble? We can learn from the writer of this Psalm who was also  in trouble. His enemies are pursuing him with orders to kill him.  What does he do in the middle of his trouble?  He prays, glorifies God, and sings!

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.  Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.  I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.  Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.  I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.

Psalm 63:1,3-4,7

When we come to believe in a power greater that ourselves, and give our will and our lives over to the care of God, we can expect to be pursued by the enemies of our soul.  We have been living in rebellion against God and in slavery to powers of darkness for some time.  They will not easily release us from their chains.

When we seek God and acknowledge that His power in us is greater than all the powers of darkness, we will begin to recognize His unlimited ability to free us from the strongholds that have kept us powerless for so long.  Jesus, by His earthly life, death, and resurrection, won the victory over every demonic power.

Instead of wallowing in self-pity because of our circumstances, will we seek God who loves us with unfailing love, ask for Him to be our strength, and then praise Him for his help and protection?

Loving God, along with King David who wrote these words we affirm for ourselves:

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.  Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.  I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.  Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.  I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.
