How To Know If I Am A Follower Of Jesus
Followers Or Not
It’s very easy for us to say that we are followers of Jesus but are we? Are we finding out and doing what He says or are we busying doing our own thing?
God’s Word speaks to this when we read:
But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.
1 John 2:5-6
Heavenly Father, help us to not just say we are Your followers but to give our attention and full energy to actually obeying Your Word.
Forgive us for the times we’ve failed to do that and help us to walk a new path today, we pray.
Refocus our thinking and desiring and behaving today we pray, so we stay simple and live in humble obedience all through this day.
We want to do that not because we have to do it but because we are so grateful for the loving care You’ve given us. Help us to regularly inventory what we are doing so we can reassure our own hearts that we are not fooling ourselves but are actually living as true followers of Jesus – as true Christians rather than those who just say words and hope for the best.
We know that when we do these things, You will bless us because You tell us:
The Lord God is like the sun that gives us light. He is like a shield that keeps us safe. The Lord blesses us with favor and honor. He doesn’t hold back anything good from those whose lives are without blame. Lord who rules over all, blessed is the person who trusts in you. Psalm 84:11-12
So we receive Your blessing and all that provides for us – safety, favour, honour, good things. As surely as the sun shines today and anyone standing in it’s rays can feel the warmth, so we know that You are giving us light and the peace of Your presence.
You rule over all so we take heart that no set of circumstances can keep You from doing this for us. We trust You and are happy to be Your followers today. Amen
