Governments and God

Thursday November 10, 2022

Earlier this week there were important mid-term elections held in the United States.  They are actually voting while I am preparing this so I don’t know the results yet but by the time you see this you probably do.

What these times of political decisions and change help us do  is to take a moment to consider where the ultimate power in our lives actually rests.

2000 years ago Jesus Christ came into human history – we’re going to celebrate his birth in a few weeks.  His sole purpose was to offer a new administration for our lives and for the world.

Here’s how John’s Gospel in the Bible reminds us of the facts:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. John 1:1-4

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge again today that You made us and our world and You, and You alone know how things work well.  We find life in You today and every day.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. John 1:9-10

We thank You God, for the new administration for our lives that You provided for us in Jesus Christ.  There’s nothing in our life that is worth anything outside of Him.  True life is in Jesus and we both thank You for that today and celebrate the fact.  We are alive because He is alive.

He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

John 1:11-13

We pray for acceptance of the truth of the Gospel and appropriate action to be taken as the Good News reaches hearts.  Lord, too many of us hear facts but never really relinquish administration of our hearts and our activities to the Living God.

We want to stay in charge of our own lives.  Forgive us Lord and help us see the absurdity of our thinking and acting.

We lay down our own control.  We move out of the power seat and we invite You God to take up Your proper place of authority in us for now and forever.  Amen
