Don’t Be Fooled
Well, tomorrow is April Fool’s Day. It’s always fun to see what kind of jokes big corporations plan or put into ads for the day. We all need a laugh with one another, and sometimes even at our own expense. I hope you will enjoy the day and have a bit of fun.
But I thought we’d take the opportunity to see what God’s Word has to say about not being a fool so we avoid pain and hardship.
The best place to start when we want to see what God considers wise and foolish is the book of Proverbs. Consider these sentences.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Fools despise wisdom and understanding.
Proverbs 1:7
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes; but he that listens to counsel is wise.
Proverbs 12:15
Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.
Proverbs 13:20
The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
Psalm 53:1
The anger of a fool is known at once, but a wise man does not speak when he is spoken against.
Proverbs 12:16
The wise shall inherit glory; but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
Proverbs 3:35
Jesus had lots to say about people who were foolish as well. He told the story of a rich man who didn’t take care of the poor but just gathered up his riches. He was foolish because he lost everything when he died and didn’t gain eternal life.
Jesus also spoke about a wise or foolish person being one who builds their life on a rock or on sand. The meaning was that Jesus is the safe rock on which we build our lives and any other foundation we seek makes us fools.
Lord, help us today to honour You and get to know You as the place where wisdom can begin to grow in our hearts. Help us to be willing to walk with wise people and listen to wise counsel.
Most of all, help us to consistently learn from You as we read Your word, consult You in prayer, listen to pastors and wise teachers who explain Your ways to us. You are God and we are not. We have much to learn. Amen
Well, let’s have fun tomorrow on April Fool’s Day but let’s make sure we are also growing in wisdom throughout the day. Have a great day.
