Strength of Character

We all appreciate a person who shows us solid and caring character – a person of strength and dignity.  I thought we could have a look at some character qualities that we can ask God to develop in us.

Now I have to warn us that we are taught this about developing character.

Patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady.

Romans 5:5

Patience grows in us when things don’t go our way in the time that we think they should.  None of us likes the circumstances that surround patience being developed and yet they are essential if we are to grow into being the person we long to be.

An encouraging truth that goes along with this though is that God gifts us with what we need so we can hang on and get through. The Bible assures us:

He has given us all the other rich and wonderful blessings he promised; for instance, the promise to save us from the lust and rottenness all around us, and to give us his own character.

2 Peter 1:4

God will put his own character into us.  That’s a hope I can hang onto when I see how weak my own is.

Well God, we need to grow up and we need all that You can work in us so we become fully the people You had in mind when You created us. 

Help us to line up our experience with what we’re taught in Your Word when you tell us:

For when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. So let it grow, and don’t try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete.

James 1:3-4

Help us to see beyond our circumstances when we are going through rough times.  You are with us.  You will give us all we need to make it through. Help us to have a faith that is strong and steady.  Amen
