GOING TO THE LIBRARY

Going to the library – one of the little joys of life.  On a recent trip to my family I went with them to a little village library in Coldwater, Ontario.

I love a library – the shelves full of books, the stories, the quiet, the thinking about this and that as you explore a topic or a life.  I love the smell and feel of a new book, don’t you?  I always enjoyed going to the library as a child and still love to read. The local library is ½ block from where I live and I have and use a library card to this day.

I do most of my reading now on digital devices – my phone, tablet, my Kindle reader, with the Libby library app or even through audio books.  It’s amazing that we can carry a whole library of books on our devices.

Got me thinking about God’s Word – His book that is a collection of books and letters.  A little library that is useful in so many ways in our lives.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

And what are we meant to do with those books.  2 main things, I think.

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Joshua 1:8

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Psalm 119:11

Simply put, we are to regularly meditate on God’s Word, hide it in our heart, and obey it so we don’t sin and we are prosperous and successful.

There’s an ancient prayer that’s been in church prayer books for centuries now.  I think it’s a very useful reminder to us and a great invitation, actually, to go to the library of God’s Word and find life-giving information to get us through each day well.

God of inspiration, you caused all holy scriptures to be written for our instruction, grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of your holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast to the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever. Amen.

Let’s go to the library today, shall we?
