Who Can We Rely On?

Monday May 29, 2023

Who can we rely on?  Fair question to ask in this age of “me first,” “what works for me” world.  So, how encouraging then, are these words from the God who loves us with an enduring and unfailing love.

So when God wanted to prove for certain his promise to his people could not be broken, he made a vow. God cannot tell lies! And so his promises and vows are two things that can never be changed.

We have run to God for safety. Now his promises should greatly encourage us to take hold of the hope that is right in front of us.  This hope is like a firm and steady anchor for our souls. In fact, hope reaches behind the curtain and into the most holy place.

Hebrews 6:17-19

We all make promises and then there are the oaths we swear in places like courts “I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help me God.”  To break that oath makes us liable to punishment.

Vows, such as marriage vows, are meant to carry a weight to them so that we think carefully about what we are committing to for our lives ahead before we make such promises.

And the sad reality is that people still tell lies in courtrooms and we all know the high rate of infidelity and divorce in our world.

So enter God, making promises to us and adding that layer of a sacred vow on top of it to help us know that His Word is completely reliable.

I forget how many promises God makes to us in the Bible.  I seem to remember someone counted about 8000.  And every single one of them are promises that we can rely on.  God is not going to change His mind and He’s not going to respond to our unreliability and unfaithfulness by being unfaithful to His Word.

If God said it, we can take it to the bank.

Thank You God, for the dependability of Your promises to us.  Even though they are extravagant and we are so often so unworthy, You are not going to change or take Your promises away from us.

What hope that does give us, and as these verses said, “hope that is right in front of us, firm and steady as an anchor to our souls.”

Help us today to both get to know Your promises so we don’t waste time worrying about things You are already promising to take care of, and help us to let go of fear and uncertainty as we face today and our unknown future.

Your unchanging word is a firm and steady anchor for our souls and we are so grateful to know that and live in that today.

Let’s take a deep breath and relax in God’s reliable care today.  Have a great day.
