Life or Death

Thursday July 27, 2023

I read a news article yesterday about folks in Philadelphia and other cities in United States taking a new animal tranquilizing drug called “tranq” or “zombie drug” to enhance the effect of drugs like fentanyl, heroin, or cocaine.

Also in our local news were the sad statistics of the deaths from drug overdose in our local province in the past month.  In spite of millions of dollars being spent every month for several years we had as many deaths as we’ve ever had in one month.

And then the story of a woman struggling with anorxia here in Canada who is applying for physician assisted suicide and will likely be able to get it when a couple of changes in the law come into effect.

If ever there was a time when these words of Jesus ring true, these kinds of news stories highlight what He was saying.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

John 10:10

Fortunately, we know that God cares and God has raised up people to care, including us.  The Bible reminds us:

But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me. Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.

Micah 7:7-8

Loving God,  our hearts are broken for these lives taken too early, for the work of the evil one having such devastating effects on their young lives.  We’re so grateful that we all have a clear choice – between Your love that gives us life and the work of the evil one that only steals, kills, and destroys.  Help us to share this message clearly and well and may it go far and wide and touch the hearts of many who suffer.

We pray for the inner pain many carry.  We pray that people will find a way to look below the surface things layered on and allow You to identify the root issues that the evil one is using to keep them trapped and longing to just be a zombie or actually to end their lives.

And for all of us today we pray:

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Roman 15:13

We all know people who are struggling.  Let’s offer some kindness and companionship in whatever ways we can today.  Most of all, let’s spend time praying for them so God can work real transformation in their hearts.  No one who is still breathing is beyond hope.
