WHY DO WE PRAY?
Why do we pray? Well, it’s as simple as the fact that in God’s Word we are told that if we want peaceful lives we need to pray for all people, and particularly those who are in authority.
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
1 Timothy 2:1-2
For almost a year now we’ve had a new king. Let’s pray for him and for our leaders.
Almighty and everlasting God, we are taught by your holy Word that the hearts of kings are in your rule, and that you direct them according to your wisdom: We humbly ask you so to govern the heart of Charles your servant, our King, that in all his thoughts, words, and deeds, he may ever seek your honour and glory, and act to preserve your people committed to his charge in prosperity, peace, and godliness;
We ask the same for all presidents and prime ministers and leaders of governments. Send down on those who hold public office the spirit of wisdom, charity, and justice; that with steadfast purpose they may faithfully serve in their offices to promote the well being of all people; that in tranquility your kingdom may go forward, till the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love. Cause them to walk before you in truth and righteousness, and to fulfill their office to your glory and the public good.
Wherever we find ourselves today we pray to be kind and effective servants of the Lord.
God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
Hebrews 6:10
Loving God, Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve is our great example. We ask you to bless all who, following in his steps, give themselves to the service of others. Fill them with wisdom, patience, and courage, that they may strengthen the weak and raise up those who fall, and, being inspired by your love, may be a real support to the suffering, the friendless, and the needy.
Thank you God for this amazing privilege of bringing all that we are to you. Help us to know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen
Well, as we said at the beginning, we pray because we’re promised peaceful lives when we do – not problem free necessarily – but peace that helps us live above what’s going on. I want that today, don’t you?
