Difficulty Following Through
Many of us have never been disciplined in the art of following through on the commitments we make. We start something and then get tired when it takes more effort than we are willing to give. Committed relationships often suffer from this type of attitude.
While a relationship is contributing to our needs, we are fine but when it starts requiring effort that we are unwilling to give, then we are ready to walk away rather than work on the challenges.
Thankfully, God has operated with us on a very different basis. He’s given and given and given regardless of how we’ve been towards Him. I love this description of His active commitment and action on our behalf.
If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us?
Romans 8:32
Thank You Heavenly Father, that because of Your love for us, Jesus was willing to die in our place for the sins which separate us from You. Thank You for forgiving our sins and restoring our relationship with You. Thank You for Jesus’ commitment to doing whatever it took because we know He had to endure a lot on our behalf.
We despised him and rejected him—a man of sorrows, acquainted with bitterest grief…He was despised, and we didn’t care. Yet it was our grief he bore, our sorrows that weighed him down.
Isaiah 53:3-4a
Help us to discover today what is required for us to follow through and be a doer of Your will? You teach us Your ways in the Bible and fill us with your Spirit to help us know how to apply what we read to our particular circumstances. Now help us to do our part - to follow through on what You say, regardless of our feelings.
Thank You again for the amazing example of Jesus who, before He went to the cross prayed this heartfelt and very human prayer,
“My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me” but in obedience to God’s will finished with, “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
Matthew 26:39b
So God, help us to follow Jesus’ example and follow through ourselves and do Your will no matter the cost. We are weak but You are strong. Help us. Amen
Let’s have a better day today by working on our “following through.”
