New Life With God's Spirit

Thursday November 9, 2023

I've been very happy to see the apple bins at the local grocery stores.  Quantities are up.  Prices are down.  We have just come through the annual apple harvest in the Okanagan valley and so apples are plentiful.

Remember the old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."  I'm not sure how true that is but I always have apples in the fridge crisper and enjoy them for a snack.

I read a devotional recently written by F.B. Meyer.  He was a minister and inner city worker who lived in the late 1800's and died in 1929.  His devotional classic "Daily Walk" is one of my regular reads in the mornings.  Some of the language is a bit dated but the truths are always sharp and timely.  He made some comments in a recent devotional about fruitfulness and the familiar verse about the "Fruit of the Spirit."

The scripture is:  The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

F. B. Meyer said this:  So it is with the soul that daily walks in the Spirit.  There are probably no startling experiences, no marked transitions, nothing special to record in the diary, but every year those who live in close proximity (to God) witness a ripening wreath of fruit in the manifestation of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, self-control.

And so Heavenly Father, as we move through changing and challenging times we pray to be those who live close to You.  One day at a time, one moment at a time, we want to see You, see Your plan for our lives, and experience Your strength and help to walk in obedience to what You are showing us.

You’ve generously given us Your Holy Spirit to live in us and to communicate with us moment by moment all we need to know.  It’s Your power in us that gives us both the willingness and the ability to do those things that produce a wonderful harvest of good in our lives.

And so today we pray that the fruit produced in us today by the Holy Spirit will be:

… divine love in all its varied expressions: joy that overflows, peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action, a life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit.

Galatians 5:22

So, let’s maybe enjoy an apple today and let it remind us of God’s good plan being worked out in our lives.  Have a great day.
