Acquiring and Using Money

Tuesday January 23, 2024

Those credit card statements that include Christmas shopping are with us now.  Inflation in everyday things like grocery shopping, gasoline and even the rent clearly shows us that our money isn’t going as far as it used to.

We all need a certain amount of money to get by from day to day and even to try to save a bit of money for an emergency and for retirement, if we can

Today we want to ask God’s perspective on the place of money in our lives.

The first thing God wants to show us is that money and more money isn’t the answer to the longings in our lives.

Anyone who loves money never has enough.  Anyone who loves wealth is never satisfied with what they get.  Ecclesiastes 5:10a

We need to be wise and careful in how we accumulate money.  There are so many high risk  “get rich schemes” that take our money rather than add to it.  God’s responsible plan is that we would gather and grow our finances little by little.

Money gained in the wrong way disappears.  But money gathered little by little grows.

Proverbs 13:11

The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

1 Timothy 6:10

Heavenly Father, we want to begin our prayer today by acknowledging what You say is true about money and our lives.  Money is a problem when we refuse to work to supply our need, thoughtlessly spend more than we earn, and run up debts we are unable to pay.  Money is a problem when we are willing to engage in dishonest behaviour in order to get it. Money is a problem when we think money is a solution to all our problems.

At one time or another, to one extent or another we’ve all fallen into any or all of these traps.  Please forgive us and give us humility to see things Your way.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.  Matthew 6:33

God, You promise that we will have all we need when we seek You first and live according to Your will.  Help us today to take the opportunity to look at both our practice of using money and our attitude toward it.  Help us to live simply and honestly, trusting that as we focus on You, You will provide for all our needs.  Amen

Well, I pray we will live well in God’s plan for the acquiring and using of money today.
