Promises of God
Each day this week we are going to look at things God has promised us – now that’s encouraging to me because God is good and good to His Word.
Someone with more time on their hands from me has counted and by their calculation there are 8810 promises from God in the Bible. Wow! At 365 days in a year that’s more than 24 years of “One-a-day promises.”
Now the question is not whether God has made promises to us and is trustworthy to keep them. Both of those things have proven true for centuries. The question for us today is, when we encounter a promise of God in the Bible, do we stop and think about what God is saying and what do we do with it?
Some of God’s promises are conditional and we need to look at what our part may be, so we can make claim to the promise. For example:
So I say, live by the Holy Spirit’s power. Then you will not do what your desires controlled by sin want you to do.
Galatians 5:16
So, God promises us power to live free from our sinful desires. Not that we won’t desire things that are harmful and outside God’s will for us, but when we do, if we live by the Holy Spirit’s power, we will not be controlled by the sin we want to do.
The greatest promise ever made by God and fulfilled was the one to send us a Saviour. No power, no collective of evil power could keep God from fulfilling His promise to You and me.
What is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.
Matthew 1:20-21
When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.
Romans 5:6
If God could pull of that great a promise, and particularly for the likes of us, is there any promise He’s unlikely to bring to pass when we open our hearts and surrender our lives to Him?
Well God our simple prayer today is to have faith to believe that You are God, that You are with us, that whatever You have promises us in Your Word is ours to “take to the bank” and use for our strength and encouragement today and every day. Amen
Well, with 1400 minutes in each day we wouldn’t even have time to read the 6 promises for every minute that the Bible contains. Let’s live today rejoicing in God’s promised generosity to us.
