God Is Close

Wednesday October 23, 2024

We speak about people who are close to us – our family members that we share our daily lives with;  our dearest and most loyal friends with whom we feel like we can share our hearts.  We often describe ourselves as being are close to people we feel care about us, who know us, who want to be with us and for us.

There’s safety, intimacy, trust, and a real sense of being supported.  Well, our God is close to us and invites us to come close to Him.

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

Psalm 23:4

Particularly during difficult and dark times it is so good to know that God is close to us, watching, offering all we need for protection and comfort. How can we experience that closeness?  It’s not complicated.

The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth.

Psalm 145:18

We simply need to call on God and God will reveal Himself to us as the one who is close, not just spiritually to say, “I’m here” but in every way that we need His care and help.

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.

Isaiah 40:11

In a world that often can seem harsh and uncaring, God offers us today a place close to His heart, where He carries us with gentleness and leads us with the same care and love that a mother has for a young child.

Well, loving God, we’re so glad that You are close to us right now and will remain there throughout the day.  We may get busy and not be so conscious of Your closeness but that doesn’t change the fact that You promise to never leave us or forsake us.

And so in these moments and often through this day we want to pause and allow Your closeness to draw us in and fill us with hope and peace and blessing. We want to respond to You as You have told us:

Come close to God, and God will come close to you.

James 4:8

Well, the only purpose of these few moments together in this way is for us to do exactly what we are speaking of today, to experience the closeness of a good God who cares of us in every way we need.  Let’s do our part to come close to Him often today so we are conscious of His wonderful closeness.
