Pray for Your Government

 PRAYING FOR GOVERNMENT

Worldwide, but certainly here in North America the political scene is filled with controversy and heated rhetoric.  Whether it is national, provincial, or local elections it seems we’ve moved from talking about issues to simply trying to find the most damaging and demeaning things to say about political opponents. 

In spite of all I don’t like about it, we are called by God to pray for our governments.

I urge that petitions, prayers, requests, and thanksgivings be offered to God for all people;  for kings and all others who are in authority, that we may live a quiet and peaceful life with all reverence toward God and with proper conduct.

1 Timothy 2:1-2

Loving God, we pray for our government leaders. Please give them divine wisdom to meet the responsibilities of their office.  Give them grace to serve You in their words and actions and to enact righteous laws.

Teach the king to judge with your righteousness, O God; share with him your own justice, so that he will rule over your people with justice and govern the oppressed with righteousness.

Psalm 72:1-2

Please grant them grace to know how to unify and support the citizens for whom they have responsibility. Cause them to walk before you in truth and to fulfill their office to your glory and the public good.

And we pray for ourselves as citizens that we may walk rightly in Your sight.  Help us to work hard, to use our resources wisely and to support peace across communities in our societies.   Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from the evil that we see and hear around us.

Fill our hearts with thankfulness, and when troubles do come, keep our trust in You strong.  Governments will come and go but You will be with us forever.   Amen.
