 Strength For Today and Bright Hope For Tomorrow

As I put these little meditations together I reflect on what we’re thinking about during these in-between days as we approach the new year.

The words of an old song came to mind, “Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine with ten thousand beside.”  And then the chorus of the song is the repeating of that wonderful phrase, “Great is Thy Faithfulness.”

And the famous words from the Bible that the song is based on:

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 

Lamentations 3:22-23

We are strengthened to live well each day because God is guiding and supporting us each step of the way.  Each experience of God’s faithfulness deepens our trust and stability as we learn and grow. 

I love the little slogan from recovery circles that reminds us, that it is “progress not perfection” that we seek. 

Living in the awareness that God is with us, and having the desire to implement His ways, will strengthen our faith and desire to honour God in all that we do and say.  We will get better and better at it.

Consistently living this way and truthfully telling our story may encourage others who are trapped in difficulties, even addiction.  Perhaps as they will be able to identify with us and the place we were at when we asked God’s help to turn our lives around, they too will make a similar choice.

And how wonderful to know that the God who gave us “strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow” will happily do the same for them.

Thank You, faithful God for being close to us and for the experience we’ve had so many times of Your stabilizing of our lives and filling us with hope, joy, and peace.  Would you fill us again today with a conscious experience of Your presence so we live in that strength today and get a clear look at the good future You have for us in the new year.   Amen
