WHO IS THE AUTHORITY ON THAT?

God’s purpose in creating humans in His likeness was that they would be in relationship with Him and reflect His image on the earth.  In creating this beautiful earth for humans to dwell in, God’s desire was that they would live well and enjoy everything He created.  However, through lies and scheming, Satan managed to make the first humans believe that God was withholding something good from them and that if they would take charge of their own decisions, they would have the best life possible.

What Satan neglected to tell them was that it was this very mistake that he made that got him banished from heaven.  Thinking that we know better than God and that we can take charge and do well is the ultimate root of all other sin.

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority

Colossians 2:9-10

God is in charge and only as we surrender to Him as the ultimate authority do we find fullness in our own lives.

When we follow the desires of our own heart, whether in an addictive lifestyle or in just ignoring the God who created us, we are disloyal to God and are giving Satan authority over us.  We are saying by our actions that we have found something better than God.

Perhaps it is time to reflect on who we really want to have authority over our lives.

Loving Heavenly Father, Forgive us for the ways we rebel against You and Your authority.  You created the world and us.  You know how things operate and without You in control it would all spin in chaos.

We acknowledge Your authority in the world and in our lives today.  Thank You for sending Jesus into the world to free us from the power of Satan and our own destructive self-will.  Today, we choose to give You authority over our lives.  Amen

What wiser thing could we do than that when this is true about Jesus:

Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18-20

As with so many other things, we are profoundly impacted by a culture that operates outside of God’s ways.  It would be useful today to have God show us how we are living surrendered to His authority or not, as the case may be, and adjust how we live accordingly.  Have a great day.
