Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide

I’m sure you’ve heard as I have this saying, "Let your conscience be your guide." God has given us a conscience as a tool to help us know right from wrong but we need to always surrender that conscience to God and His truth. Why?

Our conscience can be wrongly programmed by our experiences and the values of the people around us.  And so our commitment needs to be:

I do my level best to keep a clear conscience before God and my neighbors in everything I do. Acts 24:16

With Christ as my witness, I speak with utter truthfulness. My conscience and the Holy Spirit confirm it.  Romans 9:1

Sometimes people are incorrectly guided by false guilt which does not come from doing wrong but is a kind of psychological guilt that has developed from unfortunate circumstances or lies told them.  We need to receive truth, reject the lies, and find healing for our conscience so we don’t receive distorted messages.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

Sometimes we’re deaf to the guidance God puts in our conscience because we listen to the messages our culture and times give us, even those that contradict what God has clearly told us in His Word.

My conscience is clear, but that doesn’t prove I’m right. Acts 24:16

It is the Lord himself who will examine me and decide. 1 Corinthians 4:4

Only God is wise enough to help us discern right from wrong and support us as we renew our minds with truth.  We need to ask for truth, to be informed, shaped and governed by truth. This will bring our conscience into line with God’s good guidance.

Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your Holy Spirit who lives in us to guide us every day in every situation to know what is right and good.

You have created us to be moral beings.  Help us to reprogram our conscience and recognize truth in all our ways according to Your Word and the instruction of Your Holy Spirit.

Help us to do our part in the process by feeding our minds with Your word and choosing for Your way each time our thinking and Your word differ.  Amen

Let’s let our conscience be our guide today as a signal that we need to move toward God, asking for His truth and direction in every circumstance.
