Not Yesterday Not Tomorrow But Today

I’m so glad that we can come to God, not necessarily having all the thoughts and words sorted out that we need to say, but trusting God to know us and want to bless us, just because we come.

Listen to these familiar words:

O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.

You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!  Psalm 139:1-6

Loving God, We’re so glad You know us so well.  You are always more ready to hear than we to pray and to give more than we either desire or deserve.  Pour down upon us the abundance of Your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask but which You offer so generously to us through Jesus. We dare to ask for that because we know:

You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you. Psalm 86:5

We’re also so steadied and reassured with Your presence in our lives, God because:

You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.  Psalm 139:16

We need You with us in each moment of this day and every day.  We know that only as we hear and follow Your instructions and experience Your loving presence will we have a day that’s worth living.

And so we want to navigate today well and our prayer is just this:

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you,    and lead me along the path of everlasting life.  Psalm 139:23-24
