Seeking To Be Less Wishy Washy

Seeking To Be Less Wishy Washy

In spite of all the good that Jesus did and all the people He healed and helped, people were pretty fickle in their support of Him and their commitment to Him.  One day they would enthusiastically trust and follow Him and then when a challenge came, they would desert or disown Him.  Listen to these words from John's Gospel:

Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.        John 2:23-25

We are great at doing things for a short while, just living with gratitude for the day and not worrying too much about the future. But then somehow thoughts seep in and circumstances change a bit.

We all want to think the best of ourselves and our ability to see things through even when the going gets tough but how weak we are and how easily we stumble.  What I find so very kind about Jesus is that even though He knows us and all the weakness of our hearts and our commitment to Him, he doesn't abandon us.  How do I know this?

To people Jesus clearly said were wishy washy, His expression was “neither hot nor cold” – even though he hated their fickleness He told them:

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

Revelation 3:14-16, 20-21

Well Heavenly Father, it’s pretty clear that we are not the most reliable lot.  You, know what’s in our hearts.  Forgive us for the way we waffle under pressure when times get tough.  Forgive us for how easily we allow ourselves to be taken off track by things that bring us pleasure or are convenient in the moment rather than sticking with the program that we’ve sorted out with You for the day or the season.

Lord, help us to hear your voice asking for entry into our everyday daily living.  You want to help us overcome every challenge and be prepared for every test.  You know what we really need.

Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

Colossians 2:6-7

That’s our prayer.  Help us Lord.  Amen

Let’s have a strong and stable day.
