Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.  Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.   (1 Timothy 4:7-8 NLT)

If it is true that our perception of ourselves determines how we live, then it is critically important to know who we are.  Are we just a product of our genetic makeup, our family background, and all the experiences of our lives?  Are we bound to our past?  Will it determine who we are and how we live for the rest of our lives?  In order to answer these questions we have to ask ourselves a more basic question:  What did Jesus' death on the cross accomplish for me?

The Bible's answer to this question is quite clear:  Jesus gave his life for our sins, just as God our Father planned, in order to rescue us from this evil world in which we live. Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ.  (Galatians 1:4; 2 Corinthians 5:17-18a NLT)

God chose to give us life and sustains us by His love today as we come to Him and allow Him to meet our deepest needs.  He is a faithful companion who accompanies us on our journey.  “I have loved you with a love that lasts forever. I have kept on loving you with faithful love. I will build you up again. Nation of Israel, you will be rebuilt.  Once again you will use your tambourines to celebrate. You will go out and dance with joy. (Jeremiah 31:3-4 NIRV)

As we choose to believe and act on the truth about the loving and caring God we have, and who we are in Him, we can build a brand new life.  It is a choice.  It does take work.  We have to act in faith and believe that this ever-present God cares about our circumstances and will take care of us.  We need to break free from the bondage of lies that we have believed about God in the past.  Knowing and living the truth of a gentle and sustaining God sets us free.  Choose life! Be completely faithful to the Lord your God, love him, and do whatever he tells you. The Lord is the only one who can give life. (Deuteronomy 30:19b-20 CEV)
