Living Beyond Thoughts That Paralyze With Fear

Tuesday February 26, 2013

God does not leave the safety of our lives to the experience of others just like us. God invites us to put our lives into His hands and into His care. God knows we are weak human beings with limited understanding and power. We put our trust in doctors to provide cures for disease only to have them come to the moment where they admit, "There's nothing more we can do for you." Law enforcement officers are hired to protect us and yet they face gang violence locally and terrorism globally that is beyond their power to contain. Even the best professionals come to the end of their ability and we come face to face with evil or hardship seemingly out of control.

How are we to live without paralyzing fear in an unsafe world? God wants us to live safely and He teaches us to distinguish between damaging fear and sober precaution. Fear paralyses and drives us to dark and lonely places. Precaution helps us to avoid foolish mistakes and maintain safe steps. A cautious person thinks clearly and takes reasonable risks but also recognizes real danger and chooses another path. God never denies that we will face trouble. He promises to be with us. He promises to show us a way through the trouble when we call on Him. He promises us abundant life when we trust in His good character and His trustworthy directions.

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.” (Psalm 91:1, 14-16 NLT)

When we are convinced that God’s power is greater than any evil that would come to us, we can live daily with confidence, hope, and optimism. We can dare to believe life can be good for us and reject the thoughts that try to keep us discouraged and afraid. We can face disappointment, failure, and even disaster with soul-settling faith. As we open ourselves to God’s truth we are assured that, regardless of our circumstances, everything that is happening is working together for our good. God is building our faith as we see His hand guiding the events of our lives.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. (Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT)

God invites us to trust that He really cares about us. When our life is going smoothly, trust seems easy. The test of trust always comes when life stops making sense. When we are faced with situations that cause worry and anxiety, we have two options, 1) assume that Jesus doesn’t care about us “stinking thinking” or, 2) choose to put our trust in Him and expect good guidance and helpful solutions. Our trust must be in God even if we don’t understand everything we are going through.
