What do people in recovery do when they encounter dark and difficult times?
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” (John 8:12 NLT)
God is well aware that there have been, and may still be, dark times in our lives as we go forward in recovery. We are grieving the loss of people and activities that, even though they were harmful, were still the familiar structure of our daily living.

Many of us have had to leave friends, and even some family members behind if they are still active in their addiction. We’ve had to leave our everyday environment and enter detox or a treatment center. As we get well we make plans for a new residence. We interact with new friends. We get involved in classes and meetings and work that is very different than what we have known. While it is all good, it is different. Sometimes it feels strange, and we feel lonely and not deeply connected. This troubles us and makes us feel uncertain.

God understands this transition time. God understands empty places. God encourages us to remember that it is in these unfamiliar places that He is ready to comfort and restore us. God promises to be light where we experience darkness, comfort where we feel grief, peace in the midst of storms, and protection from danger.
For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6 NLT )
