Friday September 6, 2013

We are always making plans.  We plan our time, money, food, housing, how to get somewhere on the bus.

As I write this I'm watching a large earth moving machine clear the land on the lot next door to my friend's apartment.  Soon they'll be building a 60-unit housing complex there.  Workmen will need to follow a plan and look at that plan regularly so they build well and everything fits together.  We need a plan as well so that all the pieces of our life fit together.  God knows we need a plan and God has given us that plan in the Bible.

Jesus told a story about two men who were each building a house.  “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.  Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27 NLT)

One man planned well – he knew he lived by the sea and that wind and rain and storms would come. He built his house on a rock that was strong and safe.  Sure enough, when the wind and the rain and the storms came, his house was fine. The other man was in a hurry – he thought he’d quickly build a house – it looked lovely but as soon as the waves came it began to fall apart.  He didn’t have a good plan.

Jesus said that we are like the one who built his house on the rock when we listen to His teaching and follow it. We are like the one who built his house on the sand if we just think our own thoughts and follow our own plans. We can make lots of plans but we really need God to guide us in how to move forward safely.

God knows us.  God knows our families. God knows storms will come. God helps us get ready for each day if we will listen to His voice and follow His plan. We can make plans but if we don’t follow God’s plan first, we will end up with unexpected trouble.

We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.  (Proverbs 16:9 NLT)

For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time – to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 1:9 NLT)

Let's get to know and follow God's plan for our life today, and every day.
