Monday, January 6, 2014 -- A Power Greater Than Ourselves

A POWER GREATER THAN OURSELVES

Under our own power, we are helpless to face the challenges of this new year.  Whether we are seeking recovery from destructive and addictive life habits or think life is going well for us at the moment, we will most certainly have to face situations in this new year that are beyond us.

God our creator, who holds all of time in His care, invites you and me to live this new year with Him and face whatever comes in His power.

Here is what John was preaching. “After me, one will come who is more powerful than I am. I’m not good enough to bend down and untie his sandals. I baptize you with water. But he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”  At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee. John baptized him in the Jordan River.  Jesus was coming up out of the water. Just then he saw heaven being torn open. He saw the Holy Spirit coming down on him like a dove. A voice spoke to him from heaven. It said, “You are my Son, and I love you. I am very pleased with you.”  (Mark 1:7-11 NIRV)

God created you and me in love.  He created us for loving relationship of depending on His wisdom and living joyfully in response to His care.  We get burdened down with worries and problems and then make mistakes and respond poorly when we try to face life on our own.  Life on life's terms is too much for us.  God knows that.  Jesus Christ came to earth to show us God's love for us and to model for us this life-giving way of living in relationship of loving obedience to God's plan.

We tell God we need him, that we can't do life without him.  We confess our sinful mistakes and invite God to cleanse us and come and fill us with His Spirit.  God does the rest.  God cleanses us and give us a new beginning.  God fills us with His powerful and loving Holy Spirit.  God speaks His love to us.  We come to experience that love and approval in a deeply satisfying way.  In fact, we come alive in a way we've never been alive before and our spirit, deep within us responds to God's spirit now living with us.  We have deeper companionship and peace than anything we've previously known.  We understand things in a whole new way as we rely on God's love and listen to God's voice.

This is life with the “Power Greater Than Ourselves” that we speak about in recovery circles.  Let's live 2014 with Him.
