Thursday, January 9, 2014 -- The Disease Of Addiction
Thursday January 9, 2014

There are many opinions about the nature of addiction. We hear people speak about "facing their demons" and we hear others talk about addiction as a disease -- a medical condition. We know that conditions such as alcoholism sometimes seem to run in families while someone from a caring and supportive family can walk into a life of partying that quickly and surprisingly deteriorates into the horror of chemical addiction. We observe a person struggling with a mental health situation that we are not sure is caused by or covered up by addictive substances. While the debate about addiction continues, one fact is abundantly clear. Jesus Christ has the solution to particular needs of every person who comes to Him.

Jesus and those with him left the synagogue. Right away they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed. She had a fever. They told Jesus about her. So he went to her. He took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her. Then she began to serve them. That evening after sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who were sick. They also brought all who were controlled by demons. All the people in town gathered at the door. Jesus healed many of them. They had all kinds of sicknesses. He also drove out many demons. But he would not let the demons speak, because they knew who he was. (Mark 1:29-34 NIRV)

Particularly when we don't understand all of the factors making up a difficult situation, that's the time to turn to Jesus and ask Him to show us the way, and bring His healing power to our lives and the lives of those we love.
