Wednesday April 9, 2014

Anyone who has lived for very long in an apartment building or condo complex knows that once in a while a notice will appear that the water has to be shut down so repairs or renovations can take place. Those repairs or renovations may have nothing to do with your apartment but you are going to have to do without water for a time while the work gets done in the building. Depending on the length of time the water is shut off you might want to fill the bathtub with water or put extra jugs of water in the fridge so you have water throughout the day. Whatever preparations you make, it’s still pretty inconvenient to be without water even for a short time.

Jesus met a woman who was dealing with a water problem. She was sneaking out to the community well because the weather was hot and dusty and she was thirsty and needed water to drink and to cook with. She had another kind of thirst problem too. She was thirsty for love and to satisfy this thirst she created a troubled life for herself. Who knows if the troubles were of her own making or if they were because of the actions of others around her. What we do know is that she was living an existence that wasn’t very satisfying. She was thirsty for acceptance and friendship. She was thirsty for dignity and respect. She was thirsty for help that would ease her sad heart and lift her out of loneliness and shame.
A Samaritan woman came to draw some water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink of water… The woman answered, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan—so how can you ask me for a drink?” (Jews will not use the same cups and bowls that Samaritans use. Jesus answered, “If you only knew what God gives and who it is that is asking you for a drink, you would ask him, and he would give you life-giving water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you don't have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where would you get that life-giving water? Jesus answered, “Those who drink this water will get thirsty again, but those who drink the water that I will give them will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give them will become in them a spring which will provide them with life-giving water and give them eternal life.” “Sir,” the woman said, “give me that water! Then I will never be thirsty again, nor will I have to come here to draw water.” (John 4:8-17 CEV)
It is troublesome to live with loneliness and sin, guilt and resentment. We may try unhealthy relationships or various substances to help us deal with the pain we are feeling but satisfaction is not found in people or substances. In fact, while trying to mask the pain, we usually end up with more trouble than we started with.

Jesus has what it takes to sort out the issues that are causing problems in our life. The blood of Jesus will wash away all our sin and He will fill us with the living water of His word that will refresh us daily. This woman received what Jesus was offering and her life was dramatically changed. Jesus is ready to do the same for us today.
