What's On The Menu
Friday April 11, 2014

We are in the season of Lent. Lent is a time for self-denial, fasting, prayer, and works of mercy. It's a time to remember all that God has done for us in sending Jesus to earth to live and die for us, to give up all that he deserved in order to take on our sin and shame and die for us on the cross. Traditionally people have given up meat or chocolate or something else they love to eat for the weeks of lent. Jesus spoke about food and self-denial in this way as he taught his disciples about priorities

One hot dusty day Jesus and his disciples were travelling. They went off into town to get food. Jesus sat down by a well and met up with a woman who needed his help. When the disciples got back they asked Jesus if he wanted something to eat and he said: My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work. (John 4:34 NIV)
We eat a little food and in a few hours we are hungry for more. We drink a little water and in a few hours need to drink more to keep our body systems working well. Many times the more we eat the more we want to eat. There's something about the salt and sugar saturated food of our times that keeps us wanting more.

Jesus doesn't expect us to not eat food but he does invite us to experience the deeply satisfying way of life that comes from giving priority to what God wants us to do with our lives. During these days of Lent, why don't we open our hearts up to God, as Jesus did, and allow Him to feed us with food that really satisfies?

I tell you not to worry about your life. Don’t worry about having something to eat, drink, or wear. Isn’t life more than food or clothing? But more than anything else, put God’s work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well.. Don’t work for food that spoils. Work for food that gives eternal life. The Son of Man will give you this food, because God the Father has given him the right to do so.” (Matthew 6:25, 33, John 6:27 CEV)
