HONORING MOTHERS

Yesterday we celebrated Mothers' Day.  God speaks to us in the Bible about mothers and our relationship with them.  He helps us understand that the way we walk in this life with our mother has something to do with the quality of life we will personally achieve.

Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.  My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.  If you insult your father or mother, your light will be snuffed out in total darkness. (Exodus 20:12, Proverbs 1:18, 20:20, NLT)

When God summarized His commands about life with him and with others into ten statements, one of them had to do with our relationship with our parents.  In fact, it's the only one that promises us a long and full life if we follow the command.  We do well to pay attention to the common sense wisdom that comes from the life experience of our parents.  When we were young they had responsibility to give structure to our daily living that would shape us towards a responsible and caring way of interaction with God and others.  Just like we've made mistakes, so our parents also made mistakes, but God was careful to instruct us that if we reject our parents because they made mistakes, then we risk real danger and darkness in our lives today.  Our parents have much good to show us and teach us all the way through our youth and adulthood.

While we may have to sort out healthy boundaries against any destructive lifestyles and behaviours our parents may currently be involved in, we can still find many good ways to honour them and bless them.  God wants to raise up our parents to new life in Him that is full and rewarding for them.  Watching children and grandchildren do well is certainly one area of joy we can give to parents and grandparents.  Just spending time with parents, not seeking something from them, but simply enjoying their company is another way to honour them.  Giving thanks for all they did to help us rather than focusing on anything done that harmed us encourages them and aids us in our healing.

Let's not forget to honour our mothers now that the particular day in the calendar that focuses on them has passed. Let's wholeheartedly follow God's command so His blessing fills their lives and ours today.
