Under His Wings (2)

The world of birds has much to teach us.   Whether it is hens or eagles or swans or many other fowl, the mother covers the young with her wing and provides protection.  A google image search “under wings” provides any number of pictures that make us “ooh” and “aah” because they are such sweet expressions of the care of mothers for their fragile young.

God uses the analogy of birds covering their young to remind us of the many benefits of being in relationship with Him and putting all our trust in Him.  Psalm 91 contains one of these amazing lists:

If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you;   no plague will come near your home. The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.  I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer;   I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them.  I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.” (Psalm 91:9-10, 14-16 NLT)

One day just shortly before Jesus Christ died on the cross, he looked over the city of Jerusalem and he cried.  Why did he cry?  Just like a hen he wanted to show love and care to the people of the city but they refused him.

“How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.  (Matthew 23:37 NLT)

God has always wanted to have a relationship with us of tender unfailing love.  God has always given us a choice about whether or not we want to be in relationship with Him.  God's love is freely offered.  Our part is to make a choice to receive.  So we have to ask ourselves today, “Will I let God protect me.”

King David said "yes".  Here's how his answer is recorded in the Bible:  Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings! Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings.  Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by. (Psalm 61:4, 63:7, 57:1 NLT)

Let's come close to God.  Let's lean on God and trust in God's ability to take care of us today.
