August 26, 2014 Taking Responsibility

Tuesday August 26, 2014

Taking responsibility for our lives, from God’s perspective is:  owning our behaviour, confessing our sin, and turning away from destructive actions.  Taking responsibility means we submit our lives to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and allow Him to teach us how our lives can be shaped through God’s word.  As we learn about God’s ways we choose to lay down our old practices and old ways of thinking, and begin to behave according to God’s principles for life.  As the healing results flow into our lives, the fruit of the Spirit will be evident in our responsible dealings with others.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.  But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.  (James 1:22-25 NIV)

When we surrender our lives to Jesus, we exchange being led by our own feelings, emotions, and will, and surrender ourselves to being led by the Holy Spirit of God whom Jesus said will live with us and will be in us. We learn the ways of the Lord by reading and obeying the scriptures as written in the Bible.  We allow ourselves to be led and counseled by the Holy Spirit in understanding the word of God.  Our commitment to taking responsibility for our new life in Christ may be tested as we persevere to understand the ways of God which are contrary to the ways of the world. Victory in overcoming our old ways and habits is a step forward in taking responsibility for our actions.

No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.  And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. (1 Corinthians 2:11-12 NLT)

As we draw closer to God and embrace His will for our lives we will find that we are being changed from the inside out.  The Holy Spirit will lead and guide us into all truth.  As we mature we will find ourselves willingly choosing God’s good, pleasing and perfect way for us.  Sometimes we may fail in our desire to follow God’s ways but He has promised that He will never leave us or forsake us and that He will make a way where there does not seem to be one.

I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth.  These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.  (Isaiah 42:16 NIV)

Taking responsibility for our lives is as simple as allowing God to lead us.
