Guilty Or Not Guilty

Monday August 11, 2014

Many of us are plagued with a nagging sense of guilt--sometimes repeatedly throughout the day.  Where do these feelings come from?

There are a variety of sources for these feelings of guilt.  We feel guilty when we’ve done things that are harmful and wrong.

God clearly shows us in the Bible that we are all guilty of sin. For everyone has sinned. We all fall short of God's glorious standard.  All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own.  (Romans 3:23, Isaiah 53:6 NLT).

To make things even clearer to us, there are a variety of places in the Bible where God actually lists many of the things that harm us and our relationship with others.  Here's an example:  When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.  (Galatians 5:19-21 NLT)

Fortunately, God has made provision for the guilt we feel when we've done wrong.  Let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.  (Hebrews 10:22 NLT)

What is our part in this?  It is to admit we've done wrong, ask God to forgive us, receive God's forgiveness, and then forgive ourselves. Let's start this day with a clean slate.
