Controlling Angry Outbursts Is It Really Possible?

Wednesday September 24, 2014

We live in a world dominated by angry words, angry gestures, and angry responses.  We have protests and road rage and domestic violence.  We are fed a steady diet of angry thoughts, words, and actions on the daily news.

Yesterday we said that the first step in dealing with anger is to admit we have it and that God wants us to deal with it.  In His power, we can overcome those things that feed our anger.

God understands that a whole variety of circumstances cause us to struggle inwardly.  However, it is God’s desire that we learn how to deal with life’s difficulties in His love and care, and in His power control our anger.  What does God’s word say to us about that?

CONTROLLING OUR TEMPER SHOWS GOOD SENSE:  Sensible people control their temper; they earn respect by overlooking wrongs. (Proverbs 19:11 NLT)

GOD WANTS ME FREE FROM ANGER AND RAGE:  In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy.  (1 Timothy 2:8 NLT)

Am I still angry at someone for something they did a long time ago or even a few days ago?  What does God say I am to do about that?

DEAL WITH ANGER THE SAME DAY:  So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil. (Ephesians 4:25-27 NLT)

GET RID OF ANGER NOW:  But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. (Colossians 3:8,12-13 NLT)

Today, what will I choose to do about my anger?
